Marion Freeborn Undergraduate Scholarships JANE MARIE FORD is a Community & Regional Development major with a 3.978 GPA. She was admitted to the Integrated Studies Honors Program in 2005-06 as a Regents Scholar, and is a small group leader with the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. She is very interested in public health issues and in that arena has volunteered with the 1000 Wells Project for Africa, completed research dealing with the HIV/AIDS epidemic on women in India, and is an intern for the Freedom from Hunger program. She participated in Global Urban Trek this summer in India, continuing her research and providing a springboard for a graduate degree in public health.
KAITLIN L. GREGG is a dedicated athlete and a member of the UC Davis’ women’s cross-country and track and field teams. With a double major in International Relations and Economics, she is particularly interested in matters dealing with international poverty. She hopes to one-day work in Latin America, advancing educational opportunities and access to health care for women. At UC Davis, she is the fundraising chair for the Prytanean Women’s Honor Society, and has received several UCD scholarships. In the summer, she has taught swimming to school age children and was a volunteer for Special Olympics. While participating in all these activities, she maintains a 3.953 GPA. JEANETTE S. HAIGH is a double major in English and History with a minor in Education. Since the 8th grade she has dreamed of becoming a history teacher. She holds a 3.898 GPA. At UC Davis she is a member of the Prytanean Women’s Honor Society where she participates in volunteer work at the Davis Senior Center, is a participant in the UCD Integrated Studies Program, and a leader for the Davis Christian Fellowship. In high school she was a volunteer for the Special Olympic. Last year she received a Fulbright Scholarship. During this past summer, she helped raise money to travel to Uganda and build schoolhouses for children with AIDS and a women’s center. After graduation she plans to obtain a joint teaching credential and a masters degree in Education and then return to Africa for a year as a volunteer teacher. RAVEN J. KELLER chose to become a resident advisor in her dorm after her first year in college. While this leadership position takes up a lot of her time she continues her studies in Sociology and Art Studio and maintains a 3.826 GPA. She feels strongly about using art as therapy and is a volunteer teacher at the Davis Craft Center. She is very creative and makes some of her own clothes from recycled clothing, and is presently in-training to be the co-director of the Basement Gallery. She plans to obtain a graduate degree in either Art Studio or Sociology. AMARA L. MILLER has two diverse passions, Physics and Russian, and is pursuing them both at UC Davis with a 3.951 GPA. She is a woman with many outside interests including horseback riding that she taught at the UC Davis Equestrian Center, playing the piano, and art. As a Regents Scholar, she was admitted to the Integrated Studies Honors Program in her freshman year. In her sophomore year she continued in the Program as a resident dorm advisor. Internationally in the summer of 2006, she was a camp counselor in Russia representing America and American culture while working with over 300 Russian children. Her goals after graduation include joining the Peace Corps and obtaining a PhD in particle physics. Marion Freeborn Re-entry Scholarship MICHELLE M. JENSEN is majoring in Plant Biology with an emphasis in evolution and ecology and holds a 3.871 GPA. She is a non-traditional student, returning to college after a 6-year absence and coming to UC Davis as a transfer student. She has held several academic scholarships, serves as an intern with the North Coast Regional Water Quality Board and with the Information Center for the Environment at UC Davis. She is a member of the UC Davis Botany Club and California Native Plant Society. She plans to attend graduate school and conduct research on rare native plant ecology or invasive plant species management. Blanche Price Scholarship VAN T. LA emigrated 6 years ago from Vietnam with her family sharing living space with relatives in the San Francisco Bay area. During those 6 years in the United States, she succeeded in high school even though English was her third language, applied and was accepted to UC Davis. She is the first member in her family of 4 girls to attend college. She is a double major in Biological Sciences and Chinese, works as a researcher in the Genome Center, and as a research assistant for a Chinese professor. In addition, she has been an ER volunteer and a presenter of science-related topics to grade school children through the Adventures in Science program at UC Davis. She recently received the campus’ President Undergraduate Fellowship for a neural development research project. With her strong academic credentials, a 3.821 GPA, she plans to pursue a career in medicine. - about ufc - |
